In my life too full of darkness

Text by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

In my life too full of darkness,
Once a vision cast its light;
Now that this vision has vanished,
I am fully wrapped by night.

Little children in the darkness,
Are taken by a sudden fear,
And they sing a song aloud,
To make their anguish disappear.

I, a foolish child, am singing,
Singing in the dark this day;
Even if my song sounds raucous,
It has chased my fears away.
