I dreamed: the moon shone sadly down

I dreamed: the moon shone sadly down,
The stars appeared in full dismay;
I was lead to my sweetheart's town,
More than a hundred leagues away.

I was led right to her door,
I kissed the stone of the stairway,
That has touched the dresses she wore
And her soft feet, along the way.

It was a long night, a cold night,
Cold was the stone on the landing;
Still and pale, under the moonlight,
She appeared, at the window, standing.
